TOP50 US Patent Licensing in 2021: Huawei Ranks Fifth, OPPO is Shortlisted for the First Time

Recently, IFI Claims, a well-known intellectual property research institution in the United States, has released the "Top 50 Patent Licensing Rankings in the United States". There are 4 companies in mainland China and 1 company in Taiwan, which are respectively Huawei, BOE, Advanced Innovation (a subsidiary corporation of Ant Group), OPPO and TSMC. The TSMC ranked fourth on the list, Huawei ranked fifth, and OPPO entered the Top 50 for the first time, with a year-on-year increase of 33% in patent licensing.
Analysis of U.S. Patent Grant and Patent Application
Total amount of U.S. patent grants has reduced by 7.5% than 2020, which is the sharpest decline since 2018. Cases of the granted patents decrease from 352,000 in 2020 to 327,329 last year; in the meanwhile, patent applications also slightly fell from 413,173 to 410,093, a decline of about 1%.
Among the top 10 countries with U.S. granted patents, U.S. companies are ahead of international peers in innovation, accounting for more than half of all patents granted by U.S. Patent and Trademark Office in 2021. Japan ranks second with 47,105 patents granted, 69% less than the United States; companies from South Korea (21,264), mainland China (20,679) and Germany (14,663) rank top 5 in the countries which are granted.
There were a total of 4 enterprises from mainland China, and one enterprise from Taiwan, China, are on the list, namely Huawei, BOE, Chuangxin Advanced (a subsidiary corporation of Ant Group), OPPO and TSMC, in which TSMC ranked fourth, Huawei ranked fifth, and OPPO entered the Top 50 for the first time, with a year-on-year increase of 33% in patent licensing.
