At the intellectual property sub-forum of the Greater Bay Area Science Forum held on May 20th, the Chinese Academy of Sciences Library released the Greater Bay Area Innovation Development Patent Index Report 2023. Based on patent data, the report constructs a patent index, disclosing the characteristics and development trends of technological innovation in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

According to the report, patent applications are active in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, and overseas patents for inventions have a prominent national advantage. From 2017 to 2022, overseas invention patents in the Greater Bay Area accounted for more than a quarter of the national overseas invention patent grants.

Enterprises are the main body of technological innovation in the Greater Bay Area. The report indicates that from 2017 to 2022, the number of applications for invention patents by enterprises in the Greater Bay Area accounted for 73.44% of the patent applications, and the number of enterprise invention patents granted accounted for 78.33% of the total of inventions patents granted in the Greater Bay Area, PCT applications accounted for 94.43% of the total number of PCT applications in the Greater Bay Area.

Patent data reveals that the Greater Bay Area has technological advantages in multiple industries such as new-generation information technology, new energy vehicles, and new materials, it also performs well in the index of the number of industry-effective patents, and the proportion of industry-effective invention patents is outstanding. Among them, the new generation of the information technology industry makes up for about a quarter of the total patent authorization of corresponding industries nationwide. In addition, the Greater Bay Area has obvious advantages in overseas patents in the industry of digital creation, biology, and related service.

In combination with the industrial distribution of the enterprise patent index, in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, the innovation of the new generation of the information technology industry is highly concentrated in Shenzhen, and the innovation of the digital creative industry is concentrated in Guangzhou and Hong Kong. Among the top 100 enterprises in the Greater Bay Area Patent Index, 50 are in Shenzhen and 19 are in Guangzhou. Among the top 30 patent index universities in the Greater Bay Area, 15 are in Guangzhou and 8 are in Shenzhen.
