In terms of WIPO’s latest World Intellectual Property Indicators Report, the number of global trademark and design applications declined in 2022, but the number of patent applications has been increased for the third consecutive year and hit a record high. It shows that China, the United States, Japan, South Korea and Germany are the countries with the largest number of patent applications in 2022, while India's patent applications increased by 31.6% in 2022, becoming the main roles in the growth of global patent applications.
What should be noticed is that among the top 20 countries, the patent applications of 13 countries are more in 2022 than that in 2021. India had the largest growth, with its application volume increasing by 31.6%. Switzerland (+6.1%), China (+3.1%), Austria (+2.5%) and the United Kingdom (+2.5%) also had strong increases in applications.
The report points out that substantial growth in resident applications is the main driver of overall growth in China and India, while overall growth in Austria, Switzerland and the United Kingdom are attributable to strong growth in foreign applications.
