Clarivate releases 2024 Trademark Filing and Litigation Trends Report comprehensively analyzing the six major trademark registers

Clarivate has released the 2024 Trademark Filing and Litigation Trends Report, which provides a comprehensive analysis of the six major trademark registers, the United States, the European Union, the United Kingdom, Mainland China, Japan and South Korea. It is showed in the report that after three years of fluctuation, global trademark filing activity returned to be stable in 2023 and will realize steady growth in 2024.
The report indicates that in the last 9 months of 2023, trademark filing in the US, EU and South Korea has been very steady and has far exceeded pre-epidemic levels. Trademark registrations in the U.K. continue to grow at a steady and high rate, however, it’s likely that which will continue to grow slow in Japan and mainland China.

In terms of the classes of goods and services for trademark applications, retail and business services, technology, and technical services are the three most popular Nice Classifications (NCL). Retail and business services is the Nice Classification with the most or second most filings in all major trademark registers; technology is the Nice Classification most filed in the U.S., the EU, the U.K., and ranks in the top 3 in both Japan and South Korea; and technical services is on the list in all five registration jurisdictions.
Applicants from mainland China ranked first in the number of applications filed in mainland China and the European Union, ranked second in the U.S., the U.K., Japan, and South Korea. Applicants from the U.S. also ranked high in the number of applications filed in all six major trademark registers. Applicants from the U.K. ranked high in the three major trademark registers.
L'Oréal, the French cosmetics giant had a strong presence in all six major trademark registers in 2023: it topped the list of major applicants in both the European Union and the United Kingdom, ranked third in the United States, and was the top foreign applicant in both Japan and South Korea.
