WIPO releases report on transportation technology trends showing China's technology R&D ranks among the top in the world

On February 6th, 2025, the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) released the report, titled "WIPO Technology Trends: The Future of Transportation". According to the report, China ranks first in the ranking of countries with relevant patent inventions, and Japan, the United States, South Korea and Germany rank second to fifth respectively, these five countries collectively account for around 90% of all transport-related patents. It also shows that from 2018 to 2023, China's compound annual growth rate of transport-related patents also ranked first worldwide, reaching 14.3%. Meantime, China takes the lead in the number and growth of patent inventions in fields of land, sea, air and space transportation.

 

The report says that innovation in the global transport sector is increasingly focused on environmentally friendly future technologies, including air taxis, wireless charging for electric vehicles, and autonomous cargo ships. The emerging new technologies are reshaping the transportation industry.
