The five patent offices (IP5) accepted a total of 2,892,936 invention patent applications in 2021, an increase of 4% over 2020. Among the 1,585,663 applications accepted by CNIPA, 90% were from domestic applicants in mainland China. The USPTO accepted 591,475 cases, of which 8% were submitted by American applicants, the JPO accepted 289,200 cases including 77% submitted by Japanese applicants, the KIPO accepted 237,998 cases with 78% from Korean applicants, and the EPO accepted 188,600 applications, 44% were submitted by applicants from EPC Member States.
