Intellectual property data overview
1. Patents
In 2025, a total of 972,000 invention patents were granted, along with 1.461 million utility model patents and 666,000 design patents. A total of 96,000 patent re-examinations and invalidation cases were concluded. The examination period for invention patents was reduced to 15 months, and the accuracy rate of case closure increased to 95.6%. 78,000 PCT international patent applications were accepted. Chinese patent applicants filed 2,844 international design applications through the Hague Agreement.
As of the end of 2025, the number of valid invention patents held domestically in China (excluding Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan) reached 5.32 million, with 16 high-value invention patents per 10,000 people. The added value of patent-intensive industries as a proportion of GDP rose to 13.38% in 2024, exceeding the expected targets of the 14th Five-Year Plan for intellectual property.
2.Trademarks
In 2025, a total of 4.206 million trademarks were registered, and 384,000 trademark review cases and 112,000 opposition cases were concluded. The average examination period for trademark registration remained stable at 4 months, with the examination pass rate exceeding 97%. A total of 6,718 Madrid international trademark registration applications were received from Chinese applicants within the year.
As of the end of 2025, there were 49.877 million valid registered trademarks in China (excluding Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan). Among the world's top 5,000 brands, the value of Chinese brands reached US$1.81 trillion, ranking second in the world.
3. Geographical indications
In 2025, 104 new geographical indication products were recognized, 2,639 geographical indication products were converted and recognized, 51 applications for registration using geographical indications as collective trademarks or certification marks were approved, and over 20,000 business entities were approved to use the special mark for geographical indications.
As of the end of 2025, a total of 5,066 geographical indication products in China were recognized, 7,425 applications were approved for registration using geographical indications as collective trademarks or certification marks, and over 52,000 business entities were approved to use the special mark for geographical indications.
4. Integrated circuit layout designs
A total of 10,000 integrated circuit layout design registrations and certifications were registered and issued throughout the year.
As of the end of 2025, there have been 93,000 integrated circuit layout design registrations and certifications registered and issued.
