China has become the economy with the largest number of technology clusters for the first time

On September 20, the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) released the conclusions related to the 2023 Global Innovation Index (GII) technology clusters in advance. GII ranks the innovation capabilities of countries and economies around the world every year. As a key factor in the innovation performance of economies, technology clusters’ ranking can reveal the regions with the highest concentration of global technology activities. In terms of this ranking, the world's five largest technology clusters are all located in East Asia, with Tokyo-Yokohama (Japan) ranking first, followed by Shenzhen-Hong Kong-Guangzhou (China), Seoul (South Korea), Beijing (China), and Shanghai-Suzhou (China). A total of 24 technology clusters in China have entered the top 100 list, surpassing the United States for the first time, and becoming the economy with the largest number of technology clusters. Among the clusters, Wuxi, Zhenjiang, and Fuzhou entered the top 100 for the first time, Zhenjiang, Hefei, and Wuxi moved up with the fastest pace, and Hefei and Qingdao became the two clusters at the greatest increase in global science and technology output.
