China's patent activities in the countries participating in the BRI have entered a "fast lane", with an average annual growth rate of 20% over the decade

On October 17, 2024, "Patent Landscape: China and Belt and Road Partner Countries (2013-2023)" (hereinafter referred to as "Patent Landscape") was released. Propelled by the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) China’s patent activities in the Belt and Road partner countries have entered a “fast lane”, and these countries swiftly emerged as vital partners in China’s international IP cooperation.
Since 2013, CNIPA has signed IP cooperation agreements with 57 Belt and Road partner countries, China and the Belt and Road partner countries have adhered to the principles of “inclusiveness, development, cooperation, and mutual benefit” to advance IP exchanges and cooperation. It is showed in the "Patent Landscape" that from 2013 to 2023, the cumulative patent applications filed by Chinese applicants in the Belt and Road partner countries reached 70,000, with an average annual growth rate of 21.3%. During this period, a total of 35,000 patents were granted, with an average annual growth of 20.0%, and most of these granted patents were invention patents, accounting for over 95% of the total. Those footprints were observed in partner countries from five continents: Asia, Europe, Africa, the Americas, and Oceania. A total of 52 Belt and Road partner countries or related organizations have received patent applications from China, with an increase of 17 from 2013.
In 2023, the number of Chinese enterprises with patent applications or grants in the Belt and Road partner countries reached 3,269, with a significant increase from 608 in 2013.From 2013 to 2023, the cumulative number of such enterprises reached 9,496. Among them, the top five enterprises in terms of cumulative applications are Huawei, Xiaomi, Alibaba, ZTE Microelectronics, and Tencent, primarily operating in industries such as digital communications and the Internet.
