Nokia signs 5G patent deal with China's Vivo resolving pending years-long patent dispute between the parties

Amid a patent dispute in the technology industry, Nokia signs a 5G patent cross-license agreement with vivo, bringing an end to the pending dispute between the two parties over 5G patent technology. This agreement makes substantial progress in cooperation between the two major technology giants in intellectual property protection.

It is reported that the patent licensing agreement between Nokia and Vivo expires in 2021. However, due to differences between the two parties on the terms of the new agreement, Nokia failed to reach an agreement in time, leading to Nokia filing patent infringement lawsuits against Vivo in multiple countries. This dispute lasted for several years and attracted much attention in the industry.

After joint efforts and friendly negotiations between both parties, Nokia and Vivo finally announced on Monday that they had reached this landmark agreement. Under the agreement, Vivo should pay royalties and compensation to Nokia for the legal use of its 5G patented technology. Meantime, it also resolves all pending patent litigation between the two parties in all jurisdictions, clearing obstacles to cooperation between the two parties.

What is worth mentioning is that in addition to Vivo, global well-known smartphone manufacturers such as Apple, Samsung, Huawei, Honor, and Oppo have also signed similar patent cross-license agreements with Nokia. The signing of these agreements not only helps establish an industry environment for healthy development but also promotes the popularization and application of global 5G technology. For Vivo, the agreement signed with Nokia means that its competitiveness in the global market will be further enhanced.

Nokia said that although the dispute with Vivo has been resolved, it remains confident that its annual net sales run rate will return to EUR 1.4 to 1.5 billion in the mid-term. The achievement of this goal will bring more revenue sources to the company and consolidate its industry-leading role in global communications.
